The Chiky Basterd
We’ve written about how we came to be foster parents to a young saddleback tamarin before, but here is the story, told a little differently…
And life changed completely for the team. #Chiky required 30 live grasshoppers each day, plus a variety of fruits. He #loved bananas and #anona. He was eternally ravenous. So of course, despite adding bug hunting and poop cleaning to our already-full plates, we all promptly fell deeply in love with him.
In return he obligingly ate bananas where the others could see him and in 3 days, the first wild tamarin tried its first piece of the weird Asian fruit. Our handling program was born. All credit to #Chiky who was rehabilitated to the wild later that year. I don't know where he is, and I'm afraid to find out – #tamarin life spans are one of the shortest about. At least he won the hearts of a few clumsy terrestrial #primates.
